If you’re an avid MTG player or even just casually play Magic: The Gathering, you probably already know it’s FULL of amazing fantasy artwork. MONSTER art. Werewolf art.

Human <> Werewolf – Shadows over Innistrad Artist: Greg Staples

When I started playing MTG in the 1990s, I don’t recall any werewolf cards making an impression on me. But here I am decades later playing Magic: Puzzle Quest on my phone, getting SUPER EXCITED about werewolf cards, their art and their mechanics.

These three delightful creature cards I’m featuring in this post from the Shadows over Innistrad expansion set, for example, with the TRANSFORM ability. So much fun!

Solitary Hunter <> One of the Pack Human
Warrior <>Werewolf – Shadows Over Innistrad Artist: Craig J Spearing

While I’d like handsomer, sexier werewolf art than these cards are giving on their back / night sides instead of the typical cartoonishly flat brutish renderings that don’t really capture the vibes of their more realistic and more magical human sides … whatever. Still cool (and a sensible aesthetic choice / consistency even if I have a wanker longing for something a little more … you know).

Convicted Killer <> Branded Howler
Human <>Werewolf – Shadows Over Innistrad Artist: Deruchenko Alexander

It’s weird synchronicity to return to MTG (after a long time of barely messing with it at all, and having never had werewolf cards on my radar) under this mobile platform of a match 3 mobile puzzle adaptation of Magic: The Gathering and within weeks start unexpectedly and randomly working on this Rugaru.com blog / site and suddenly have werewolves everywhere I turn and get to PLAY with them and COLLECT them.

Note: cards pictured here are screenshots from Magic: Puzzle Quest and not exactly what actual physical MTG trading card versions look like.
